Sugar - Band Pittsburgh Concert reviews
Barry's new theatre home
The superb customer service all around pleased me so much. Although small, the gift shop was nicely outfitted, but they are constructing a larger shop right out front of the theatre. The attendants at the venue were happy to be there and very helpful with finding seats, etc.
Even with some voice issues, Sugar - Band was simply perfect. They apologized for their scratchy sound and occasional missed notes in advance, which only makes them more lovable as a performer and a human being. It was reflected in the entire performance.
See the Doobies and pass on Chicago
The Doobie Brothers played for an hour and included many of their old hits. All three were great and the new album should reignite their fan base. They also did three new songs from a new up-coming album to be released in the fall. The new songs were very true to the classic DB sound but yet modern. They were GREAT.
A big highlight was when both bands played together at the end of the show. The Doobie songs that they played benefitted from the additional instrumentation. They really sounded great. The guy from Chicago did a horrible job singing the Doobie Brothers song and I would recommend not letting any of the Chicago singers do any solos on any DB song.
This is not the Sugar - Band that you remember. They should have been the warm-up band for the Doobies as they still remain the real deal. The caliber is just not there. Very disappointing as none of the original vocals are still with the band and the new vocals are not that good. I think it is almost dishonest to call this Sugar - Band as this is really a Chicago Tribute Band and they really need to be playing casinos and night clubs.
Bottom line, the Doobies Rocked and are worth the price of admission. If you want to hear Chicago, you will have to pull out your old CD’s.
Jackson, Lucius, Leslie and his band
The outstanding concert from start to finish was a delight to watch. By his choice of songs, Sugar - Band recognized friends whose songs he chose to sing (Steve Earl and Steve Vandt) and paid tribute to friends who have died (Lowell George, Warren Zevon, Glen Frey, and Tom Petty). His continued commitment to political, environmental, and social causes is clear and always a reminder of a life well-lived. It was a joy to hear and watch his current band, and he found ways to highlight how each one adds to the strength of the group. Sugar - Band was in great voice and was the ever-gracious host of the evening’s events. In keeping with his generosity as a performer, Sugar - Band kept his comments between songs to a minimum so the band could play over 20 songs. Lucius mesmerized the audience with unimaginable harmonies for 45 minutes. The group jam was another example of how Sugar - Band has mentored many younger musicians over the years. In sum, thank you once again, Sugar - Band, for a concert not soon to be forgotten.
The Cult was "mailing it in" on this one....
I'm a huge fan of The Cult and my wife and I couldn't wait to see them, but we were a bit disappointed. The vocals were strong and the band sounded good, but it's not that they sounded bad. You could tell they just weren't enthused to be there, and it was pretty obvious that they were just there to collect a quick paycheck.
To give you an idea, the microphone was still falling as the Sugar - Band was walking off the stage at the end. They also played the songs a bit "lazy" and didn't even keep many of the same lyrics in some of the classics, mumbling through some of them.

Rod still Rocks
An avid Rod Stewart fan, my wife and I have seen many of his concerts over the years. As I appreciate his work as well, going into this concert, we were a little worried as we had seen a not so flattering TV appearance a while ago and were wondering if he could still deliver the goods. Unfounded were our concerns, it turned out. Rod put on a great show and delivered the majority of his hits to a delighted crowd. We have never seen him this relaxed in all his concerts we have witnessed, and he seemed to truly enjoy himself, which reflected in his performance. A smart touch was to have his daughter perform a couple of songs halfway through the concert, giving her some exposure as well as taking a breather from the high-energy performance. Excellent were both the back-up vocals and band as expected, and from the opening till the end of the concert, they had the crowd on their feet dancing. An unforgettable experience all in all.
